30hp – Control of Selective Catalytic Reduction by the use of a virtual ammonia sensor

Scania is now undergoing a transformation from being a supplier of trucks, buses and engines to a supplier of complete and sustainable transport solutions.

Ingress:
Thesis project at Scania is an excellent way of making contacts for your future working life. Many of our current employees started their career with a thesis project.

Background:
Efficiency and emissions are the two crucial factors development engineers in the automotive business strives to improve. The proposed study is a part of this continuous improvement towards perfection of the Scania engine.

Target:
With tougher emission legislations comes decreasing margins for exhaust treatment control and a need for improved exhaust treatment diagnostic arises. An important exhaust treatment component is the SCR system reducing the engines harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides to close to what can be measured. In order to handle the last remains of nitrogen oxides the sensor system needs to be supplemented by an improved virtual sensor i.e. an advanced model estimating what can’t be measured.

Assignment:
To design and validate an improved functionality for a virtual SCR-state sensor suitable for embedded system use. The virtual sensor consists of a combination of an existing state of the art SCR-model and an improved state observer.
The study is based on a SCR-model and a previous observer thesis work conducted in Matlab/Simulink. Matlab/Simulink will thus be the preferred programming language.

Education:
The ideal candidate have good knowledge in signal processing, Matlab/Simulink programming and on chemical reaction engineering. Knowledge on internal combustion engines, thermodynamics and measurement technology is also advantageous. A high level of initiative is required and good communications skills in booth Swedish and English will be needed to successfully conduct the assignment.

Time frame
Recruitment will be conducted continuously from the posting of this add and the position might be filled earlier than the final date stated in the add.
The thesis is a master thesis to be conducted in 20 weeks, starting first quarter of 2020.
